Jigoku Shoujo S1

7/10 (Overall) 9.3/10 (Horror)

This anime is another oldie that is really hard to find so, many people don't know about it perhaps you should try your luck?

Jigoku Shoujo (Hell Girl) is a horror related anime with a lot of really messed up torture involved though, most of it doesn't involve any action par-say there is a lot of mental torture. The anime's story is really hard to follow and the first few episodes of it feel very repetitive to say the least as pretty much the same thing happens quite a few times in a row before the plot gets going. If you can ignore that part and see either the deeper meaning behind each episode or genuinely enjoy the slow moving plot then the anime is actually pretty good.

Enma Ai is our main character this time and her job is basically to take people to hell who get cursed oh, and the person who cursed them originally. However, you can only access this incredible instance if you have been 'wronged' by said person. It doesn't really get into how that works until season two so you're kind of left to guess which I think could have been written out better but, from everything I have read on the manner the manga(which is what anime is written off of normally) is written in very similar fashion so, the manga actually isn't very popular but the show is. This kind of thing works better on screen as you have to be a really good writer overall to actually induce fear into another person's mind by making them read something. Back to the point though, the anime focuses mostly on Ai's job to take people to hell showing an unfortunate soul being wronged in the most heinous of ways to get them to give Ai a call then have the horrible antagonist of the episode be drug to hell in malicious fashion. I have to say that Ai is one scary girl because she really seems to like to fuck with people's minds a lot it makes that really obvious as within the first few episodes there is a veterinarian that gets a taste of what being the dog in the cage is like. That episode made me watch the rest of the show really it just showed that the writer was pretty avid in her quest for the most fucked up ways to screw with people. There is pretty much always no struggle between Ai and her prey so there are not many actual fight scene's in the anime as a whole. Then again Ai is a pretty powerful being so, I am not surprised there is little struggle from lowly mortals. With that in mind Ai's backstory gets revealed towards the end of season one I won't give the details but, she is basically so sinned she herself cannot go to hell so as her payment to hell she landed this job. Not a bad gig I suppose since I would much rather be sending people to hell rather than living there though, that depends on which hell from which universe and that is a whole different discussion in itself.

Hell Girl is not a very good starter anime and is pretty messed up so if you aren't prepared to put yourself in at least some trauma from it then I wouldn't suggest it but, if you wanna make your friends squeamish when they come over then this is your anime. Despite some of the adult topics of the anime if your kids ever wanted to have a sleep over and you wanted to give everyone nightmare material Ai can certainly give you a hand plus, she might serve as a good deterrent not to do something bad. If anything this anime is purely fun to watch for the raw suffering that Ai inflicts and for that bittersweet moment when the character who enlisted her help ends up realizing that they themselves are about to go to hell.

Thanks for reading as always. Please subscribe and share!
