Death March
7.5/10 Hey guys, I'm back with yet another anime review. Something a little different this time as we're going to review one that isn't actually complete yet. I thought that people were really ragging this anime down with no chance and because of this I have decided to do a review even though, it is not finished.
Let's jump into this one right away this one may be longer than others as I try to argue a better opinion to this anime than it's previous reviewers.
Death March is about a game programmer named Satou(or Sazuki Ichirou) that is suddenly transported into another world with some gimmicks from the game he was creating tagging a long for the ride. Many people and I do mean many people have consecutively shat upon this anime without really ever giving it a chance. While their concerns are certainty noteworthy and a lot of their arguments valid here is what they aren't really telling you.
One of the many things that has happened in the past year or so is this massive influx of "Isekai" anime or "Another World" anime where the main character is transported into some crazy world in which they have no stake in. Usually these animes start off with the character being extremely powerful though there are some exceptions like Konosuba. Due to this sudden influx there have been a vast amount of very average anime in this category which is why that stuff like Death March has this negative stigma.
Here are some key things that make Death March different or at least in my opinion. First off, Satou is a much more mature character as unlike many protagonist in this genre he is an adult in his previous(real?) life. Secondly, much like konosuba there have been a multitude of people from Satou's world that have been brought here so he is not alone in fact they took this a step further by introducing another character that is from the real world to Satou. Thirdly, Satou does not appear to be interested in romance(minus the brothel) as he considers this more of a temporary thing rather than permeant. Now, this may change if he learns that he is stuck there. but currently he has kept all the characters at an arms length. Lastly, as broken as Satou's powers are he is not unbeatable even with his huge level gap so long as he does not know about the power it still affects him greatly. There are a few examples of this actually being exploited which in this genre is rare to see a over-powered character's weakness exploited.
Not everything in this show is positive though. I will hit on some of the things that are less talked about for instance the titles. Now granted they actually appear to have some kind of reason behind them but, they appear and disappear way too fast for you to read a lot of them without going back a few times to catch them all. Though, if I had to say my biggest peeve on this show is the very fact that at the beginning he said he wanted to explore this world and he has done very little of that. I personally think it would have made the overall show much more interesting had they went down the exploration path sooner rather than later as this was one of the foundations of Satou's character when the show began.
With all that being said I'll put it like this. Death March is very far from the best Isekai anime you could watch but, it is also very far from the worst if you take anything away from this review it should be to give this anime a chance if you like this genre. You may hate it or you may love it. There are flaws with it but, there are things that set it apart. It might not be the epic anime to spur a six hundred episode series but, I don't think people should just write this one off as fast as they have been. In fact lets just go ahead and say you should try not to write off any anime as fast as this one got blasted unless it is truly not your cup of tea. So, watchi it have fun watching both the good and the bad of Death March!
That'll be it for this Friday review and I'll see you next time! Do leave a like comment or share to your buddies.
