Watamote
10/10
Watamote is about a girl who is unfortunately unpopular in pretty much every aspect of life. Tomoko is a crazy girl in every way that counts and her death metal intro doesn't really help that despite this she is probably one of the better female characters you'll ever come across.
Watamote is a comedy overall there isn't really much else to it but sometimes simple is better and in this case it really hits home. Tomoko is a character that is pretty likable to the point you feel bad for her in just about everything she fails even if she may have deserved it. If anything Tomoko is an expert at making you feel bad for not talking to the shy girl you used to know because she was probably just like Tomoko. Not super hot or super ugly just really shy with a lot of dirty thoughts and misinterpretations of the world around her. There are not a lot of major characters in Watamote aside from Tomoko but, the side characters are pretty well thought out when they do appear.
Being mostly a comedy anime surprise surprise its' strength is comedy! Though is is a close one with Tomoko in general because, lets face it Tomoko despite her antics I guarantee you'll remember her over any random bimbo in most anime. Mainly because she wasn't played up to be a total sex marketing tool and is a lot more realistic than how anime women normally are. Not everyone is going to be the perfect missy in your class; sometimes there are ugly or average ones. Not saying that Tomoko is any less anime than the next girl but, she does have a very different messy appearance. Some of the comedy in Watamote is reference related as it appears that Tomoko is actually super into manga in general and so sometimes when she goes off on her tangents she lets loose a schlew of references about other animes or characters. I think that watching Tomo-chan grow through the entirety of the show (twelve episodes and one OVA) was probably the biggest highlight to me though, she never did accomplish her initial goal.
My only real complaint with Watamote is that the creators must really hate the poor girl as they don't pull any punches embarrassing her or calling her ugly. Now perhaps this is some twisted revenge against a real person but, yeash they should give the poor girl a break. Unfortunately if you do really like this anime I am sorry to inform you that Watamote is only really popular in the west whereas in Japan it flopped super hard. So, the likelihood of a second season is slim to none but, it doesn't mean that it is nonexistent since the OVA came out and Tomoko talked about a second season possibility. It has been a few years since then but, we will have to see. Also, the manga is still on-going I believe so they should have material to go off of should they decide to actually make a round two.
In conclusion, Watamote is really worth a watch if you haven't heard of it or just have never seenit I implore you to give it a chance. It is really funny without much fan-service which is had to come by in anime. Though the hope for a second season is slim maybe you will be the magic number to push it over the edge if you watch it. Watamote is hard to come by so if you can't find it I can always provide a link to it.
